Cloud vs traditional POS · Hong Kong
Cloud POS or a traditional till: an honest comparison.
The real question isn’t cloud or not. It’s what happens when the internet goes down.
A traditional POS keeps everything on a computer in the shop. A cloud POS keeps your records online, so you can see sales and stock from your phone and add branches easily. The catch with many cloud systems is that they stop when the connection drops. EliteTeQ is cloud-based and keeps selling offline in Hong Kong, then syncs when the connection returns.

How a cloud POS that works offline runs
- 1
Records live online
Products, prices, stock and sales are kept in the cloud, so every till, phone and branch works from the same records.
- 2
Each till keeps a working copy
The till holds what it needs to keep selling, so a dropped connection or a power cut on the router doesn’t stop the queue.
- 3
Sales queue while offline
Sales, returns and stock changes made offline are saved on the device in order, each with its time and the staff member’s name.
- 4
Everything syncs when you reconnect
When the connection returns, the queued records upload on their own and every branch and the owner’s phone catch up.
Is a cloud POS better than a traditional POS in Hong Kong?
For most businesses in Hong Kong, yes, as long as the cloud POS also works offline. A cloud POS lets you see sales and stock from your phone, add branches without new servers and get updates and backups automatically, while offline mode keeps the till selling through power and network cuts.
- Phone access to every branch
- Lower upfront cost
- Automatic updates and backups
- Offline selling that syncs later
Where the difference shows up
01 / 03
You can check the shop without being in it
With a traditional till you see the numbers when you’re standing at the back-office computer. With a cloud POS you see them on your phone, wherever you are.
- Sales by branch, live
- Stock levels from anywhere
- Same view for the owner and managers

Adding a branch is a login, not a project
A traditional system usually needs its own server or terminal setup per location. With a cloud POS a new branch uses the same records from day one.
- Products and prices already there
- Stock transfers between branches
- Staff logins per branch

What you pay, and when
A traditional system is mostly paid upfront, with hardware, a server and maintenance later. A cloud POS is a subscription that includes updates and backups.
- EliteTeQ: USD 499 per year
- No server to buy or replace
- Updates included

What happens to a cloud POS when the internet goes down?
Many cloud systems stop. EliteTeQ keeps selling: sales and stock changes are saved on the device and upload automatically when the connection returns, so nothing is lost and the queue keeps moving.
When does a traditional POS still make sense?
A single shop with no plans to grow, no need to check the numbers away from the counter and someone on hand to maintain a server can do fine with a traditional system. Once you want phone access, a second branch or automatic backups, cloud is usually the better fit.
Is a cloud POS cheaper?
Usually cheaper upfront, because there is no server or licence to buy. You pay a subscription instead; EliteTeQ is USD 499 per year, with updates and backups included. Compare the total cost over a few years, not just the first payment.
Who owns my data in a cloud POS?
You do. Your sales, stock and customer records belong to your business, and reports can be exported for your accountant whenever you need them.
How does EliteTeQ compare with systems already used in Hong Kong?
We publish side-by-side comparisons with Lightspeed POS and Square POS and Toast POS, covering price, offline selling, branches and tax records. You’ll find them on our POS comparisons page.
