Odoo POS Alternatives for Businesses That Want to Sell, Not Run a Software Project

We hear a version of this story often. An owner chose Odoo because it promised everything in one system, and it was free to download. A partner was hired. Months passed in workshops about fields and workflows. The till finally went live, but the stock module still isn't quite right, an update is waiting because a custom module needs fixing first, and the partner bills by the hour.

Odoo didn't fail. It did what it's designed to do: give you a flexible base to build on. The trouble is that a supermarket or a pharmacy usually doesn't want to build anything. It wants to sell, keep stock straight and see the numbers.

The short answer: if you want ERP-style control without a developer, look at EliteTeQ. If you only need a simple till for one shop, Loyverse is a free start. If you trade in North America, Europe or Australia, Lightspeed is a mature option. If you're built around an online store, Shopify POS fits. And if you have strong technical people and unusual workflows, Odoo may still be right.

What Odoo is good at

Odoo is a broad open-source business suite from Belgium, available as a free Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition, with partners in many countries.

  • Breadth: sales, stock, accounting, purchasing, manufacturing, HR and more.
  • Customisation: with a developer, almost anything can be changed.
  • Community: many modules, forums and partners.

Why businesses look for alternatives

  • Time to go live. Choosing and configuring apps takes weeks or longer before the first sale.
  • Ongoing upkeep. New versions arrive regularly. Custom modules sometimes need work before you can upgrade.
  • Costs in pieces. Edition, hosting, extra apps and partner time are separate lines on the bill.
  • Support through a partner. Good partners are valuable, but you depend on their availability.
  • Local conditions. Shops dealing with power cuts, Octopus and branches across town want those handled from day one, not configured later.

The alternatives

EliteTeQ: POS and back office, ready to use

EliteTeQ is a cloud POS with stock, purchasing, multi-branch and staff roles built in. Our team sets it up with you, and it runs in a browser on devices you already own. Priced from USD 499 per year.

What it gives an owner:

  • Stock that matches the shelf: sales, deliveries, returns and damages all recorded.
  • Purchasing and suppliers: purchase orders, deliveries received against them, and orders sent to suppliers on WhatsApp.
  • Branches in one view, with transfers recorded.
  • Selling offline, with sales synced when the connection returns.
  • Octopus, card and cash recorded against the same sale.
  • Tax on every sale, kept in reports for IRD.
  • Staff roles and audit logs, and product movement reports.
  • Support from our own team, on phone and WhatsApp.

It doesn't try to cover manufacturing, payroll or project management. If you need those, Odoo or a dedicated tool may serve you better.

Suits: shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, hardware stores, restaurants and wholesale counters that want control without a project. See our full [EliteTeQ vs Odoo](/blog/eliteteq-vs-odoo/) comparison.

Loyverse: free and simple for one shop

Loyverse offers a free core POS app, with paid add-ons for things like employee management and advanced inventory.

Suits: a single small shop or café that wants a simple till and doesn't yet need suppliers, branches or deep stock control.

Lightspeed: mature, where it operates

Lightspeed is a Canadian company with established retail and hospitality systems, popular in North America, Europe and Australia. It's priced by subscription that grows with locations and registers, and it's built around card payments.

Suits: card-first retailers and restaurants in its core markets.

Shopify POS: if your online store comes first

Shopify POS shares one catalogue with a Shopify online store, which is useful if online is your main channel.

Suits: retailers built around Shopify, in countries where it supports their payments.

A local POS vendor or Odoo partner with a ready package

Some local vendors and Odoo partners offer pre-configured packages for common business types. If you like Odoo's breadth but not the project, ask whether a partner has a tested setup for your sector, what's fixed and what's extra, and who answers when it breaks.

When Odoo is still the right answer

Stay with Odoo, or choose it, if:

  • You have in-house developers or a partner you trust and can afford.
  • You need manufacturing, HR or project tools in the same system as the till.
  • Your workflows are unusual enough that building them is worth the cost.

How to decide

1. List what you actually use. Many businesses on Odoo use POS, stock and purchasing and little else. If that's you, a ready-made system may cover it. 2. Add up the real yearly cost. Include hosting, apps, partner hours and upgrade work, not only the licence. 3. Test the bad day. Unplug the internet during a demo and keep selling. 4. Ask who you'll call. And how long it usually takes them to answer.

If moving from Odoo makes sense, export your products, customers and suppliers, and we'll help bring them into EliteTeQ, set up staff logins and run a test day.
