Lightspeed Alternatives for Shops and Restaurants Outside Its Home Markets

Lightspeed usually comes up in one of two ways. Either an owner has read about it in a review written for American or European retailers, or they've used it abroad and want something similar at home. Then they start asking the practical questions. Will my customers' DuitNow payments show up properly? What happens when the internet drops on a Saturday? What will the bill look like when I open a second branch?

Those questions matter more than any feature list, so this guide is built around them.

The short answer: Lightspeed is a mature, well-built system for card-first retailers and restaurants in its core markets. If you trade in Africa, the Middle East or Asia, where mobile money, power cuts and branches across town are part of daily life, compare it with EliteTeQ for stock and branch control, with Loyverse or Square as low-cost starters where they're available, and with Odoo if you have a developer.

What Lightspeed does well

Lightspeed is a Canadian company with separate products for retail and hospitality. Lightspeed Retail grew partly from Vend, which it acquired. It's popular in North America, Europe and Australia.

  • Detailed retail tools: variants, purchase orders and multi-store stock.
  • A large ecosystem of add-on apps.
  • A polished interface that staff generally find easy.

It's priced by subscription, which grows as you add locations and registers, and it's designed around card payments in its main markets. Neither of those is a flaw. They just reflect who it was built for.

Why owners outside those markets look elsewhere

  • Payments. If a large share of your sales arrive by DuitNow or bank transfer, you need them on the same sale as card and cash, or your end-of-day report won't add up.
  • Connection. Where the power or internet drops regularly, the till must keep selling and sync later without anyone re-typing sales.
  • Cost as you grow. Pricing that rises with each register or location makes owners think twice about adding a till at a busy counter.
  • Local support. When something breaks during a rush, you want someone who knows your market and answers quickly.

The alternatives worth comparing

EliteTeQ: for growing shops and branches

EliteTeQ is a cloud POS with stock, purchasing, multi-branch and staff roles built in. It runs in a browser on devices you already own.

  • Stock that matches the shelf: every sale, delivery, return and damaged item is recorded.
  • Branches in one view: see every location's stock and sales together, and record transfers.
  • Selling offline: the till keeps going when the internet drops, then syncs.
  • DuitNow, card and cash recorded against each sale, so totals reconcile.
  • Tax on every sale, kept in reports for RMCD.
  • Staff roles and audit logs, product movement reports, and WhatsApp to suppliers and customers.
  • Support from our own team on phone and WhatsApp.

Priced from USD 499 per year. It isn't an online store builder, so if e-commerce is central to your business, plan for that separately.

Square: simple and card-first, where it's offered

Square has a free POS app and a fee on each card transaction. It's easy to set up and good for small sellers. It operates in a handful of countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and Japan, and isn't offered in most of Africa or much of the Middle East and Asia.

Suits: small card-first sellers in Square's markets.

Loyverse: a free start for one small shop

Loyverse offers a free core POS app with paid add-ons for things like employee management and advanced inventory. It's used by small shops and cafés in many countries.

Suits: a single small shop or café that wants to start with no software cost and is happy to manage the back office itself.

Odoo: deep customisation, with a developer

Odoo is an open-source business suite with a POS app, available as a free Community edition and a paid Enterprise edition, implemented by partners in many countries.

Suits: businesses with in-house developers or a trusted local Odoo partner, especially if they need manufacturing or HR tools as well.

Local POS vendors in your country

Many markets have their own POS companies that know local tax rules and payment habits well. Some are excellent. If you're considering one, ask the same questions as below, and ask to speak to a current customer in your sector.

Four questions that decide it

1. How do your customers pay? If DuitNow is a big share, rule out anything that can't put it on the same sale as card and cash. 2. How often does your connection drop? If it's weekly, test offline selling in the demo by unplugging the router. 3. How many branches will you have in two years? If more than one, make sure branches are in one view and the price doesn't punish each new till. 4. Who answers the phone? Call support before you sign anything.

If you're a single shop taking mostly cards in a country where Square operates, Square or Loyverse may be all you need for now. If you're growing, juggling payment types and branches, and can't afford the till to stop, EliteTeQ is built for that.

Moving from Lightspeed

Export your product and customer lists from Lightspeed, and we'll help bring them into EliteTeQ, set up staff logins and run a test day. Because EliteTeQ runs in a browser, you can usually keep the tablets and computers you already have.
