Quick answer: If you mainly need to take card payments, a Yoco or iKhokha card machine is the usual starting point; Yoco’s Core plan has no monthly fee. If you run a shop, restaurant or pharmacy, you also need POS software that tracks stock and profit and keeps selling during load-shedding. Options include EliteTeQ (from USD 499 per year), Yoco Plus (R249/month), iKhokha iK POS (from R660/month), Loyverse (free, with paid add-ons) and Lightspeed (from USD 89/month).

“Not confirmed” or “Not stated” means the provider’s page did not say so when we checked. Yoco’s pricing and POS pages disagree on which paid plan includes multi-location. Lightspeed and Loyverse publish prices in US dollars. Square is not included because it does not offer card processing in South Africa.

Card machine or POS software: which do you need?

A card machine (from Yoco, iKhokha and others) accepts card payments. Some come with simple POS features, but the machine alone does not run your stock, profit or branches.

POS software records each sale against the item sold, updates stock, shows profit by product and branch, and prepares the reports you need for VAT. Many businesses use both: the card machine to take payment, the software to run the business.

How much does a POS system cost in South Africa?

Card machines cost from about R699 once-off (iKhokha Flyer Lite, Yoco handheld POS from R699) plus a fee on each card payment, for example from 1.35% on Yoco Core and from 2.75% on iKhokha for local cards. POS software ranges from free (Loyverse, Yoco Core) to R249–R960 per month for South African plans (Yoco, iKhokha) and from USD 89 per month for Lightspeed. EliteTeQ POS starts from USD 499 per year.

Which POS works during load-shedding?

Loyverse and Vasy state that they keep recording sales without an internet connection, and EliteTeQ runs fully offline and syncs when the connection returns. Yoco states that its handheld devices run on battery for up to 18 hours. We could not confirm an offline-sales mode for iKhokha, Lightspeed or GAAP from their pages.

Does my POS need SARS e-invoicing?

Not yet. VAT in South Africa is 15%. In August 2026 SARS published a VAT Modernisation consultation paper proposing e-invoicing and e-reporting, with phased implementation expected to start during 2030 and business-to-consumer sales coming last. Until then, what a shop needs is a POS that keeps accurate VAT records and reports.

How to choose a POS in South Africa

  • Load-shedding: check whether the till keeps selling offline, not just whether the device has a battery.
  • Card fees: compare the per-transaction rate as well as the monthly fee.
  • Stock by branch: check which plan includes more than one location.
  • VAT: make sure sales and VAT reports are ready for your SARS returns.
  • Currency: some providers bill in US dollars, so factor in the exchange rate.
